Hi, I’m Kate Spilsbury.

Across the different parts of my life, one thing keeps showing up: I love helping people understand their options and feel more confident taking their next step.

A little about me

I’m a fourth-generation Floridian, raised in Kissimmee and now raising my own family in Jacksonville. My husband, Omar, and I have two children. Family and faith are a big part of my life, and so is getting out and experiencing the world.

Cruising is one of our favorite ways to explore, especially in the Caribbean, and I’ve also cruised the Mediterranean. I’ve studied art in Europe, ice climbed in Alaska, scuba dived in Hawaii, lived in Costa Rica, and called the east rim of Zion National Park home. I love seeing new places and trying things I haven’t done before. There’s still plenty of the world I want to experience.

Drawn to teaching and helping people

I’ve always been drawn to teaching and helping people, too. After graduating from BYU, I spent 19 months serving a mission in Texas, where I learned Spanish. After returning home, I led a local nonprofit program connecting children with mentors, with a focus on children whose parents were incarcerated.

Today, I teach adult Sunday School. My daughter’s experience with dyslexia also led me to become Orton-Gillingham certified so I could better understand how to support her. Teaching is part of my life in different ways, and I keep learning along with it.

Why I started Mere Benefits

That carries into my work. After eight years with Florida Blue, I started Mere Benefits because I had seen how the right insurance coverage could affect someone’s life. I wanted to help people understand their options and build an agency where education came first.

Insurance decisions can feel overwhelming. I want people to understand what they are choosing, how their coverage works, and what it means for their lives. That belief is at the heart of Mere Benefits and the reason I wrote my book.

To deepen the knowledge I bring to those conversations, I earned the Registered Social Security Analyst® (RSSA®) designation in 2024 and the Certified Medicare Insurance Planner® (CMIP®) designation in 2025. These areas are closely connected, and I want to help people understand how their Medicare and Social Security decisions fit together.

That work eventually grew into my book, Get It Right: Medicare & Social Security Unlocked, and a desire to share what I’ve learned with fellow insurance agents.

Helping agents become trusted local resources

I also enjoy sharing what I have learned with fellow insurance agents.

Building a local reputation takes time. For me, it has involved showing up, forming relationships, answering questions, and making complicated topics easier to understand. My experience in nonprofit leadership, retail insurance, and owning an agency has given me different ways to connect with people and serve my community.

Through this website, I share practical resources, tools I have tried, and lessons from building my business. My goal is to help other agents grow their knowledge, improve their processes, and become someone their community knows and trusts.

Learning is personal for me

My daughter’s experience with dyslexia led me to become Orton-Gillingham certified in June 2025. I wanted to better understand how she learns and how I could support her.

That experience has made me even more thoughtful about how I explain things. People learn differently, and clear explanations can make a real difference, whether we are talking about reading, insurance, or something entirely new.

Beyond work

My husband, Omar, and I are raising two children in Jacksonville, which has been my home since 2008. My faith is an important part of my life, and I serve as an adult Sunday School teacher.

Family, faith, education, and community are woven into the work I do. This website is a place to bring those parts together and share something useful along the way.

You’ll find my book, practical resources, lessons from building a business, and a little of the person behind it all. I’m sharing what I know, what I’ve tried, and what I’m still learning.

Building programs, relationships, and businesses

  1. Kissimmee

    Osceola High School

Grew up in Kissimmee and graduated from Osceola High School, home of the Kowboys!

  2. BYU

    Brigham Young University

Degree in Recreation Management and Youth Leadership, with a minor in Marriage, Family, and Human Development.

  3. 19 months

    Mission in Texas

Served 19 months for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in San Antonio, New Braunfels, and Austin. I learned Spanish and spent my days meeting people, listening, teaching, and serving. Those experiences still influence how I connect with people today.

  4. Nonprofit

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Florida

As a director, I helped build the Clay County program from the ground up into a thriving operation: recruiting mentors, matching mentoring relationships, hiring and training staff, fundraising, managing grants, coordinating events, and working with a board of directors. I also started a school-based mentoring program, developed community partnerships including with the USO, and spoke regularly to civic and community organizations.

  5. Leadership

    Reinhold Foundation nonprofit leadership program

During my nonprofit years, I applied for and earned a place in a nonprofit leadership program supported by the Reinhold Foundation.

  6. 8 years

    Florida Blue

Three years as a sales consultant and five as director of the North Jacksonville retail center, which opened during the first Affordable Care Act enrollment period, when many people were trying to understand an entirely new way of getting health coverage. I also supported the opening of the Riverside retail center.

  7. 2018

    Founded Mere Benefits

Seeing how much the right coverage could affect someone’s access to care and their health shaped my next chapter: an agency that helps people directly with their insurance options and puts education first.

  8. 2024

    Registered Social Security Analyst® (RSSA®)

Deepening the Social Security side of the conversations I have every day.

  9. 2025

    Certified Medicare Insurance Planner® (CMIP®)

Because Medicare and Social Security decisions fit together, and people deserve help seeing how.

  10. June 2025

    Orton-Gillingham certified

My daughter’s experience with dyslexia led me to better understand how she learns and how to support her.

Leadership and business programs

I have also continued developing my leadership and business skills through:

  • Leadership Nassau, Class of 2017
  • Stein Fellowship, Class of 2017
  • JAX Chamber Hightower Emerging Leader program, inaugural class
  • JAX Bridges, Cohort 22
  • Jim Moran Institute Small Business Executive Program, 2024

Each experience has helped shape how I lead, build relationships, and serve my community.

At Florida Blue I also earned recognition that included Presidents Council, Top Ancillary Producer, and a BlueXcellence award.

Getting out and experiencing the world

I love seeing new places and trying things I haven’t done before.
